The symbol is a representation of two Norman swords cutting the four winds and bolted in the center, creating a sea compass. Add it to your morning routine!
Popularized in the Baroque period, the Symbol of Lipari historically signified well wishes against misfortune; for safe travels and speedy returns. It was said to have mystic powers of protection and was prominently featured on shields carried into battle, ships out at sea and on the homes soldiers/sailors hoped to return to.
Originally created by nomadic refugees who banded together, stole Roman ships, and learned to sail. According to legend, they (my ancestors) joined forces with Liparo (grandson of Ulysses and the Sorceress Circe). Together they settled the Aeolian Islands and built what would become a major port city of the Carthaginian Empire, Lipari.
